Prince Philip Pictured at Nazi Funeral

Edward VIII with Wallis Simpson
On Dec. 11, 1936, King Edward VIII gave up the British throne to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American. Years later, the FBI investigated the couple’s links to Germany’s Nazi regime.

In 1941, the FBI began close surveillance of the duke and duchess after it was informed that the couple were being used by the Nazis to pass on secrets that could wreck the Allied war effort. A prime suspect, the FBI was told, was Joachim von Ribbentrop, then the Nazis’ foreign minister, who was said to have been the duchess' lover when he was ambassador to Britain in 1936.

Edward’s long-rumored ties to Nazi Germany became common knowledge after the release in 2003 of papers compiled by U.S. naval intelligence agents asserting that Hitler saw the former king as a friend, even in the middle of World War II. The papers had remained secret for fear they would upset the Queen Mother, who died in 2002 aged 101. Of course, as it turns out, Edward VIII was also a Catholic Knight of Malta like many Nazi Nobility were.

Prince Philip has broken a 60-year public silence about his family's links with the Nazis.

In a frank interview, he said they found Hitler's attempts to restore Germany's power and prestige 'attractive' and admitted they had 'inhibitions about the Jews'.

The revelations come in a book about German royalty kowtowing to the Nazis, which features photographs never published in the UK.

They include one of Philip aged 16 at the 1937 funeral of his elder sister Cecile, flanked by relatives in SS and Brownshirt uniforms.

One row back in the cortege in Darmstadt, western Germany, was his uncle, Lord Mountbatten, wearing a Royal Navy bicorn hat.

Another picture shows his youngest sister, Sophia, sitting opposite Hitler at the wedding of Hermann and Emmy Goering.

Explaining the attraction of the Nazis, 84-year-old Prince Philip told an American academic: "There was a great improvement in things like trains running on time and building. There was a sense of hope after the depressing chaos of the Weimar Republic.

"I can understand people latching on to something or somebody who appeared to be appealing to their patriotism and trying to get things going. You can understand how attractive it was."

He added that there was 'a lot of enthusiasm for the Nazis at the time, the economy was good, we were anti-Communist and who knew what was going to happen to the regime?'

Philip stressed that he was never 'conscious of anybody in the family actually expressing anti-Semitic views'. But he went on to say there were 'inhibitions about the Jews' and 'jealousy of their success'.

Philip was born Prince of Greece and Denmark on Corfu in 1921, the youngest of five children and the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. All four of his sisters married German princes and three - Sophie, Cecile and Margarita - became members of the Nazi party.

Sophia's husband, Prince Christoph of Hesse, became chief of Goering's secret intelligence service and they were frequent guests at Nazi functions.

Philip went on to fight with distinction for the Allies in the Second World War before marrying the young Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen. He served with the Royal Navy where, by 1945, he had risen to the rank of first lieutenant on a destroyer and was mentioned in despatches.

All of his sisters and brothers-in law are now dead but he keeps in contact with his German relatives.

His comments on the family's Nazi connections appear in Royals and the Reich, by Jonathan Petropoulos, to be published in Britain in May. Source

Driver's red-light camera victory could signal change

http://www.bakersfield.com/news/local/x1515766502/Drivers-red-light-camera-victory-could-signal-change

It took two years and six trips to court, but Bakersfield resident Diane Bevacqua finally beat a red-light camera ticket.

And her victory could, at least for a time, help stymie prosecution of the tickets, traffic lawyers say.
"This could end up killing that whole program," said Bill Slocumb, a Bakersfield attorney, about ramifications of appellate decisions in Bevacqua's case and one in Orange County.

But local police, who prosecute the violations, say there'll be no impact.

Last month, Bevacqua's ticket was thrown out on appeal by Kern County Superior Court Judge Colette Humphrey in part because the photos and video used to convict her came from a private company -- not from a public employee, as one section of the state evidence code requires.

The city's red-light camera system, like most around the country, is owned and operated by a private vendor. For Bakersfield, that's Arizona-based Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., part of a global firm based in Australia.
Bevacqua, 56, who with her husband owns local business Wallpapers ETCetera, was making a left turn from eastbound Stockdale Highway onto California Avenue on the afternoon of Sept. 15, 2008, when the telltale bright flashes popped.

To this day, she believes the left-turn arrow she was looking at -- the pole-mounted signal on the corner -- was yellow.

"My whole contention was basically over the light," said Bevacqua, who represented herself in court. "I didn't want to get off over a technicality." Read the rest of the story HERE

Bush Says He Doubts Bible Literally True

WASHINGTON (Dec. 9) -- President George W. Bush said his belief that God created the world is not incompatible with scientific proof of evolution.
In an interview with ABC's "Nightline" on Monday, the president also said he probably is not a literalist when reading the Bible although an individual can learn a great deal from it, including the New Testament teaching that God sent his only son.

Asked about creation and evolution, Bush said: "I think you can have both. I think evolution can — you're getting me way out of my lane here. I'm just a simple president. But it's, I think that God created the earth, created the world; I think the creation of the world is so mysterious it requires something as large as an almighty and I don't think it's incompatible with the scientific proof that there is evolution."
He added, "I happen to believe that evolution doesn't fully explain the mystery of life."

Interviewer Cynthia McFadden asked Bush if the Bible was literally true.

"You know. Probably not. ... No, I'm not a literalist, but I think you can learn a lot from it, but I do think that the New Testament for example is ... has got ... You know, the important lesson is 'God sent a son,'" Bush said.

"It is hard for me to justify or prove the mystery of the Almighty in my life," he said. "All I can just tell you is that I got back into religion and I quit drinking shortly thereafter and I asked for help. ... I was a one-step program guy."

The president also said that he prays to the same God as those with different religious beliefs.

"I do believe there is an almighty that is broad and big enough and loving enough that can encompass a lot of people," Bush said.

When asked whether he thought he would have become president had it not been for his faith, Bush said: "I don't know; it's hard to tell. I do know that I would have been — I'm pretty confident I would have been a pretty selfish person."

Bush said he is often asked whether he thinks he was chosen by God to be president.
"I just, I can't go there," he said. "I'm not that confident in knowing, you know, the Almighty, to be able to say, Yeah, God wanted me of all the other people."

He also said the decision to go to war in Iraq was not connected to his religious beliefs.

"I did it based upon the need to protect the American people from harm," Bush said.
"You can't look at the decision to go into Iraq apart from, you know, what happened on Sept. 11. It was not a religious decision," he said. "I don't view this as a war of religion. I view this as a war of good, decent people of all faiths against people who murder innocent people to achieve a political objective."

He said he felt like God was with him as he made big decisions, but that the decisions were his.

"George W. Bush has to make these decisions."
