Going "Astray" and "Ignorance" is basically the same Hebrew and Greek Words

Mat 18:12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?

"Astray" from the strong's:

http://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G4105&t=KJV

1) to cause to stray, to lead astray, lead aside from the right way

a) to go astray, wander, roam about

2) metaph.

a) to lead away from the truth, to lead into error, to deceive b) to be led into error c) to be led aside from the path of virtue, to go astray, sin d) to sever or fall away from the truth 1) of heretics e) to be led away into error and sin.

I don't think this covers willful beligerence towards God! This sheep that went astray did so accidentally. To me this sounds like sound doctrine!

Further more we have this: Hebrews 9:7 "But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:"

"Errors" here is also translated into "sins of ignorance"

This is the NIV: "But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance." (I am quoting from the NIV simply because it is the correct translation as verified by the Strong's Concordance.)

Strong's Concordance for "errors" in Hebrews 9:7 (KJV): "

1) a sin committed through ignorance or thoughtlessness"

Check out the OT: "And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly, when he sinneth by ignorance before the LORD, to make an atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him." Number 15:28

Hebrews 10:26: "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,"

Job 28:28 "And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that [is] wisdom; and to depart from evil [is] understanding."

"hmmmm, define "ignorance." i know that poisoning your body in ignorance (welcome swine flu vaccine) still leads you down the same path as one who studies the subject and still chooses to get it...or by "ignorance" are you indicating a more child-like stupidity, like cheating at cards?"

according to Strong's:

"Ignorantly"

1) to go astray, err, commit sin or errora) (Qal)... Read More1) to err (mentally)

2) to sin (ignorantly or inadvertently)

It's good to look at other verses that speak of ignorance in context.

Like Deu 19:4: "And this [is] the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past."

or

1Ti 1:13 "Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy , because I did [it] ignorantly in unbelief."

This even shows further WHY Paul received forgiveness. He "obtained mercy, because" he did it in ignorance.

I believe this is a very important lesson for Christians. 2 minutes ago · Delete

Spirituallysmart.Com back Online

Spirituallysmart.Com was offline for a couple of weeks due to coming to the realization that Tony Alamo was guilty of sexual child abuse. I simply believed the testimony of the victims at Alamo's trial. It seems there are people who don't believe this. they would rather start a whole new conspiracy theory that I had been paid off, threatened or some other garbage.

Tony Alamo's own attorneys stated that the testimony was "brutal" and were only trying to "technically" fight the charges of violating the Mann Act. I believe the jury decided right. I agree with the jury from what I heard in the evidence. And I also believe Alamo was guilty under the Mann Act.

From Alamo's camp you never heard them officially refute the accusations of child rape. There was only a legal posturing of disproving the technicality of the charges. Hear what Alamo's attorney says. I believe he is simply saying, "they can't get him on the Mann Act."

Besides this legal posturing there was message after message coming from Alamo justifying old men raping very young girls. Even as young as 8 (see section 3 where it states that his version of "marraige" is protected by his idea of "freedom of religion").

Tony Alamo was often stating publicly in messages that he believed it was OK according to the bible to commit these crimes but would add, "but I don't practice that." Tony would often say this at that point, "the Bible teaches about being a eunuch but i'm not one of those either.." So that means he was hiding his activities from his own congregation! And now many have had their own children taken away or they are in hiding.

How did Alamo do this? By only allowing very trusted members of his church to get close enough to him to where they knew his business.

In the trial Alamo admitted to having all these women as wives. But Alamo's followers weren't allowed to hear any of the trial. They are continuing to intentionally hoodwink the remaining members by keeping the fqacts from them all. Tony's "wife" Sharon also stated she saw more and more girls coming to reside in her home but didn't notice they were getting younger and younger.

I believe in religious freedoms very strongly. But this isn't a case of a violation of religious freedom. This was about helping innocent young victims by any means necessary.

What Tony did was to try and make it look like the Vatican/Government was attacking him. Meanwhile he's a criminal who needed to be brought down. He disgraced all Vatican reseachers, Christians, homeschoolers, Patriots, etc and etc..

I have learned a lot from what i have been through in regards to Alamo Ministries. I will be talking about this for a while in the near future. I will be talking about why I was ever part of Alamo Ministries. The good aspects of Alamo Ministries that I knew, and the difficulties I had with them and also the fact that my support of Alamo ministries went from almost all out support to only supporting their civil liberties. Which I don't believe they were ever violated. The government had to investigate these allegations against Tony Alamo Ministries.

God bless you all!

in the last days perilous times shall come

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Why my site is offline..

Comments welcome!

I started spirituallysmart.com back in 1999 as just a little one page web site to share my faith in Jesus Christ. After 9/11 I couldn't help but get sucked into reading and studying all the conspiracy theories about that day and other theories beyond 9/11. What I began seeing was many people attempting to name who was behind it all. Which group? Or maybe it was an agreement among MANY groups and they basically share the spoils resulting from "lowly man's" labors? etc etc I saw many were blaming the Jews and I did not like that or believe it. (I do now believe some powerful and rich masonic Jewish people ARE involved but all fall under obedience to the Papacy).

I began looking more into WHO was behind "it all" and came up with a lot of what Jack Chick and Alberto Rivera stated in their work. Both I knew about since around 1997. But I never put them to the test to see if they were right about who was behind the conspiracies in the world. When I did that, I found A LOT of what they said to be correct and I began adding to my little one page web site.

My web site and work from the beginning was never meant to be site SOLELY dedicated to proving Tony Alamo as an innocent man. But my site slowly but surely turned into this. I never thought Tony Alamo would have done the things he did. But now I do. During Alamo's trial, what I heard from their own defense showed me who Tony Alamo and his inside people really were. And I am embarrassed now that I EVER even mentioned "Tony Alamo" and I'm sorry to all my readers for this. But at least I am accepting fault. Many are continuing on attempting to re victimize the victims by blaming Alamo's troubles on the Vatican. It's not true everyone. And I probably wont even come back to spirituallysmart.com after this. And I gladly suffer the reproach in public for my errors in the past.

At least I have the open mindedness to see I was in error in the past and attempt to correct it.

So long everyone. And you can thank Tony Alamo for this because it was his DECEPTIVE TACTICS that caused it.

Tony Alamo Guilty On All 10 Counts

Jurors convict evangelist on 10 sex-abuse counts
By JON GAMBRELL (AP) – 29 minutes ago

TEXARKANA, Ark. — Tony Alamo, a one-time street preacher who built a multimillion-dollar ministry and became an outfitter of the stars, was convicted Friday of taking girls as young as 9 across state lines for sex.

Alamo stood silently as the verdict was read, a contrast to his occasional mutterings during testimony. His five victims sat looking forward in the gallery. One, a woman he "married" at age 8, wiped away a tear.

"I'm just another one of the prophets that went to jail for the Gospel," Alamo called to reporters afterward as he was escorted to a waiting U.S. marshal's vehicle.

Shouts of "Bye, bye, Bernie" — Alamo was born Bernie Lazar Hoffman — came from a crowd gathered on the Arkansas side of the courthouse, which straddles the Texas-Arkansas border.

Jurors were convinced Alamo had had sex with the girls when they were underage, but deliberated for more than a day to ensure that they considered everything, jury foreman Frank Oller of Texarkana said.

"That was the evidence. That was proven," Oller said. "We came up with a full decision that we are quite satisfied with."

Defense lawyer Don Ervin said the evidence against the 74-year-old preacher was insufficient and that the preacher would appeal. He also said Alamo's criminal history — he served four years in prison on tax charges in the 1990s — "will hurt him" at sentencing in six to eight weeks.

"We believe he will face the rest of his natural life in prison," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyra Jenner. The penalties on the 10 charges total 175 years in prison, she said, and violations of the century-old Mann Act also carry fines of up to $250,000 each.

The five women, now age 17 to 33, told jurors that Alamo "married" them in private ceremonies while they were minors, sometimes giving them wedding rings. Each detailed trips beyond Arkansas' borders for Alamo's sexual gratification.

Alamo never testified. Though he announced to reporters that he wanted to, his lawyers told him he should not directly challenge their testimony and the attorneys argued to jurors that the girls traveled for legitimate church business.

State and federal agents raided Alamo's compound last Sept. 20 after repeated reports of abuse. Defense lawyers said the government targeted Alamo because it doesn't like his apocalyptic brand of Christianity. Alamo has blamed the Vatican for his legal troubles, which include a four-year prison term for tax evasion in the 1990s.

With little physical evidence, prosecutors relied on the women's stories to paint an emotional portrait of a charismatic religious leader who controlled every aspect of his subjects' lives. No one obtained food, clothing or transportation without him knowing about it.

At times, men were ordered away from the compound and their wives kept as another Alamo bride. Minor offenses from either gender drew beatings or starvation fasts.

In the end, prosecutors convinced jurors in Arkansas' conservative Christian climate that Alamo's ministry offered him the opportunity to prey on the young girls of loyal followers who believed him to be a prophet who spoke directly to God. They described a ministry that ran on the fear of drawing the anger of "Papa Tony."

"You really appreciate the courage that they showed stepping up to face their demons," said Thomas Browne, the special agent in charge of the FBI office at Little Rock.

Alamo remained defiant during the trial. He openly referred to the Branch Davidian raid at Waco, Texas, muttered expletives during testimony and fell asleep at times — while alleged victims spoke from the witness stand and again as prosecutors urged his conviction.

He had built his multistate ministry on the backs of followers who worked in various businesses to support the church. In the 1980s, he designed and sold elaborately decorated denim jackets, hobnobbed with celebrities and owned a compound in western Arkansas that featured a heart-shaped swimming pool.

Federal agents seized a large portion of his assets in the 1990s to settle tax claims after courts declared his operations a business, not a church. Among items offered for auction were the plans for the studded jacket Michael Jackson wore on his "Bad" album.

The Southern Poverty Law Center considers his ministry a cult.

The woman considered to be Alamo's common-law wife, Sharon Alamo, and several other of his 100-200 followers missed the verdict, hustling up the courthouse stairs and entering an empty courtroom five minutes after court adjourned.

Jurors have found Tony Alamo guilty on all 10 counts of child-sex charges. Each count carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Jurors arrived at the Texarkana federal courthouse at 8:30 a.m. Friday. They spent 8 1/2 hours discussing the 10-count federal indictment against the 74-year-old Alamo on Thursday.

Jurors paused twice to ask questions of the judge. The court won't say what they were about. Alamo's attorneys said it was about clarification of the Mann Act.

Prosecutors allege Alamo took five underage girls across state lines for sex as far back as 1994. They claim one was as young as 9 and was "married" to the evangelist.

Defense attorneys say the girls traveled on legitimate business for Alamo's ministry, which espouses an apocalyptic form of Christianity.

Going on a hiatus

Here's what I now believe regarding Tony Alamo. I believe that he was marrying young girls, even as young as 8 years old. I DO NOT think that is of GOD. I think it's "molestation" and sin and criminal activity. But I DO NOT believe he is guilty of the charges of "BRINGING YOUNG GIRLS ACROSS STATE LINES FOR SEX"

These charges do seem odd. Why wouldn't they just charge him with criminal sexual abuse or something like that? There are probably answers to all this and so I don't want you to think I'm suggesting there isn't. I just don't have those answers.

So I'm writing this because I have been such an avid supporter of Tony Alamo in the past. That has now ended though. Even if Tony gets out of this and is found "not guilty" for "bringing young girls across state lines for sex" I will still believe he and the parents of that 8 year old girl are guilty on several counts of child abuse. And I blame any parents who knew about this "marriage" between Tony Alamo and this 8 year old girl and have not realized your error in accepting this.

in 1997-99 When I was at the church in Fort Smith Arkansas, I remember catching wind that a certain very young girl was going to "live with the sisters" in Texarkana. At that time I had a dream about the girl and in it the girl was standing in a dark blue satin dress with her hair done up with blue satin ribbons in her hair. The lights were dim and the feeling was if anything dismal. And that's it. It was a very odd and vivid dream and the dream stayed with me these 12 years. And I'm still wondering what it meant. If anything at all.

Maybe God was telling me there was a sad wedding ahead of her.

The story we are now hearing regarding this precious child (now young woman) breaks mine and my wife's hearts. And that's just the very beginning of these accusations against Alamo. What else is or isn't true about Tony?

So at this time I am readjusting. And when I am finished I will be better than ever. I know this. I wish everyone good health and happiness.

Gary Dale Cearley is a false witness

Recently I was confronted by a man I consider to be a Jesuit Coadjutor (helper) and a Vatican Shill.

His blog is entitled "Thou Shalt not Bare False Witness." Who is this directed to? A dead man named Alberto Rivera (Ex Jesuit Priest). Seeing this man Gary wasn't getting much of a response from Alberto, he decided to go after someone a little more lively. Me.
Link to Cearley's Blog Challenge

He began confronting me over my comments to a book he wrote refuting Alberto Rivera's info tying the Papacy to Islam. Why would someone who professes to be a baptist (Clinton claimed to be a Baptist also) take it upon himself to try and vindicate both the Papacy and Islam all the while attempting to DEBUNK Alberto Rivera?

That alone should have any serious researcher  suspicious. When I began reading excerpts of his book I found a lot of these types of wordings. "it was known to be" or "it is well known that..." as if this verifies his info.

Gary Dale Cearley

While reading these types of things i couldn't help to think that this mans book is TRASH. I don't consider Alberto infallible. I am open to anything and if I saw enough evidence to show Alberto is a fraud I would never promote his work and I would completely disassociate myself from him.

But this has not happened. over and over again i see his words verified. Can Alberto misspeak? can he get a fact wrong? yes he can. I lived on a US NAVY vessel and knew like the back of my hand it's exact dimensions and the exact manning, etc. if I tried to tell you the exact dimensions today i may get some of it wrong. Does that mean i wasn't on the ship? NO! Does it mean I wasn't in the NAVY? NO!

So, recently i began to look again at this man who is publicly calling me out and here's what i found right away.

I just began looking a little bit into the Gary Cearly who confronted me on his blog in regards to Alberto Rivera's testimony. Just to show you a taste of what this man is all about, he interviews Dr. Walid Mustafa, a Professor of islam at the University of Bethlehem in Israel.

here is the school:

http://www.bethlehem.edu/about/history.shtml

"Bethlehem University of the Holy Land is a Catholic Christian co-educational institution of higher learning founded in 1973..."

As you can see, this man Gary Cearley actually tries to use a professor from a CATHOLIC University to debunk Alberto Rivera!

You can begin reading that and see what this Professor is about and what his sources are. THIS WAS THE FIRST THING I FOUND IN RESEARCHING THIS MAN! what will I find next? I don't know if I need to continue.

Here is the Professor he interviewed.

http://thoushaltnotbearfalsewitness.wordpress.com/category/jack-chick/

Additionally, when I began reading this interview I saw that the professor has a slanted version of history. First of all the Jews who left Egypt with Moses didn't study Judaism as this Professor suggests. they followed only the law of Moses. "Judaism" is a much newer religion which I believe started around the time or after the time of Christ. I would have to look at that to get the exact details. ("Judaism" or the religion the Jews practice now is not what any of the Jews practiced of old. "Judaism" is not even found in the Old or New Testaments of the Bible. "Judaism" started after 70 AD when the Temple was destroyed by the Romans.)

But these are the reasons I said what I said about Cearly. When I started looking at things he was saying way back when I saw that he was washed up.

Not to mention the other links i have included in this thread along with Dr. Veith's incredible lecture entitled "The Islamic connection"

I would say that this Cearley who has challenged me has found himself buried under a mountain of evidence tying Islam to the papacy that he would NEVER be able to dig himself out of.

Thomas Richards

Now let's see if he approves my comment in his blog...

EDIT: Gary Dale Cearley has finally, after almost a year, approved my comment. Additionally he's acting like he didn't wait to post it and doesn't explain why he waited so long.

The Faces of Meth and a Foster Parent

Attention, This is a 2016 edit of this page. It has been exposed that "Faces of Meth" is propaganda tailor made for the bogus war on drugs. Also read this (Crack Then. Meth Now.) for your own education. It turns out Meth is actually virtually the same drug as Adderall which is liberally prescribed by doctors all over the world. Please read this article and this article to read the details.

But that doesn't remove the hypocrisy of state agencies and people involved in the story below.

This woman looks as if she lost her soul.. Look at more pics

Look at what a former Meth Lab did to a family's health after they moved into the house. ~Story

Now read this article:

"Lawton foster mother arrested after meth lab found in home with kids"

Michigan authorities removed two children from a licensed Van Buren County foster mother Tuesday evening after finding an active meth lab in the home.

The lab was discovered when the Lawton Police Department, assisted by other agencies, investigated possible methamphetamine production and found evidence in the home’s basement.

That’s when police also discovered that the small children were placed with the 51-year-old foster mother, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release.

They were returned to Child Protective Services for relocation by Berrien County, since that’s where their custody cases originate.

Police plan to file meth manufacturing charges against the woman, whose name has not been publicly released.

I wish Foster Homes would be overly scrutinized like parents are..

Al Zimmerman, DCF, Arrested On CHILD PORN Charges

TAMPA, Fla. — A former spokesman for Florida's child welfare agency was sentenced to more than 24 years in prison Friday for taking nude photos of teenage boys, including a 16-year-old under the agency's care.

Al Zimmerman's arrest prompted a review of hiring policies and personnel files at the Florida Department of Children and Families to make sure every employee has had a criminal background check. The former TV newsman pleaded guilty in January to a charge of producing child pornography. Other charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

Zimmerman apologized to the victims and his family.

"I keep hoping I'll wake up from this, that it's a bad dream," he said. "I've pretty much destroyed my life."

U.S. District Judge Susan C. Bucklew sentenced Zimmerman to 24 years, four months, which was at the lower end of the sentencing guidelines.

One of his attorneys, Eric Kuske, said Zimmerman waived an opportunity to argue for a lower sentence because he wanted to save his family and the victims the humiliation of having details of the crimes recounted in court.

"Most of my tears have been for the people who have suffered for my mistakes," Zimmerman told the judge.

Prosecutor Colleen Murphy-Davis said Zimmerman preying on a child in the foster care system was "the ultimate insult." Zimmerman was the public face and media liaison for the child welfare agency.

Prosecutors said in court documents that Zimmerman paid one boy for sending him photos and took his own photos of the boy posing nude and masturbating.

The boy told investigators his friends began gathering at Zimmerman's house, where they were given alcohol, the document said. Zimmerman lived in Lakeland in central Florida and part-time in Tallahassee.

Another boy told investigators he photographed himself nude with his cell phone camera on five or six occasions and sent the photos to Zimmerman, who then sent him money.

The documents also detailed explicit e-mails authorities said Zimmerman sent to one of the boys describing poses and activities he wanted in photographs to get top dollar from overseas pornographers.

After learning that he was being investigated, Zimmerman asked a child welfare agency computer technician to throw his home computer in an outdoor trash container so authorities couldn't get access to it, prosecutors said.

State probes apparent suicide of foster child, 7

State probes apparent suicide of foster child, 7

A work group has been appointed to investigate factors leading up to a 7-year-old foster child's apparent suicide.

BY CAROL MARBIN MILLER
cmarbin@MiamiHerald.com

Gabriel Myers, the 7-year-old Broward boy who hanged himself in
the shower of his foster home.

Florida's top child-welfare administrator has appointed a work group to look into the April 16 death of Gabriel Myers, the 7-year-old boy who took his own life at a Broward County foster home after a stormy nine-month odyssey through the state foster-care system.

At the top of the priority list for Department of Children & Families Secretary George Sheldon will be an examination of the state's reliance on psychiatric drugs for children in state care.

`CHEMICAL RESTRAINTS'

The issue has troubled the department since the early 2000s, when a Broward child advocate claimed the drugs were being used as ''chemical restraints'' on unruly children.

Sheldon has asked administrators to begin reviewing the files of 2,200 children, or about seven percent of those in state care, to determine precisely which medications the children are being administered, he said. Gabriel, who was originally from Ohio, had been prescribed a handful of mind-altering drugs in his final months, DCF has said.

''I have serious concerns about a 7-year-old on the number of medications he was on,'' Sheldon said. Because DCF acts as the parent for foster kids, Sheldon said, the agency must ensure that children are being administered only the medications they truly need.

''It is difficult for any of us to comprehend how a child so young could have deliberately and consciously made the decision to end his life,'' Sheldon said. ``But in order to help prevent this type of tragedy from happening again, it is critical we review all available information to determine the factors that led to Gabriel's death.''

Overseeing the work will be Jim Sewell, a former deputy commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, who has been working with Sheldon in recent months. Sheldon said he expects the review to be thorough, and he hopes Sewell's law enforcement background will help the team dig deeply into the boy's troubled past.

Gabriel came into state care in June when his mother was found nearly unconscious in a car with the boy in a Denny's parking lot. Inside the car were several prescription drugs, including Xanax. Reports said Candace Myers had dozed so deeply she did not notice that officers had taken the boy.

BOUNCED AROUND

In coming months, Gabriel lived with a maternal uncle, then moved to a foster home, and then to another home in Margate, and through it all his condition worsened. On April 16, he got into a squabble with the 19-year-old son of his foster father, announced his intention to kill himself, and then hanged himself from a detachable metal shower cord.

Sheldon said he also will ask the work group to study the state's handling of children who have been the victims of sexual abuse, and who then go on to seek other victims. Records show Gabriel had been molested by an older boy in Ohio, and had begun to act out sexually among other children.

Hitler's Death Camps - Holocaust . . . or Inquisition?

Battle Cry
"Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?"
Gal. 4:16

Hitler's Death Camps
Holocaust . . . or Inquisition?

Issue Date: January/February 1989

Dr. Alberto Rivera, ex-Jesuit priest, says "holocaust" is the wrong word. He prefers "inquisition." "The Jews have not let us forget the Nazi slaughter of their people, but no one has continued to remind us of the other four to six million non-Jews also executed," he points out.

Bohdan Wytwycky in "The Other Holocaust" documents seven million non-Jewish civilian victims of the Nazi death machine in Poland, Ukraine and Belorussia. Historians suggest that the death camps and gas chambers were used specifically against the Jews, yet no serious investigation has been directed toward this even larger number of non-Jews who were executed. Dr Rivera states that in his training as a Jesuit he was taught that the Vatican manipulated the Nazi death machine not just against Jews, but more broadly against ` all "heretics."

When we remember that the Jesuits were specifically established to counter the "heresy" of the Reformation and that that objective has not changed, we are constrained to examine this other group of victims more carefully. Other books published by Chick Publications such as Secret History of the Jesuits by Paris, Godfathers and Smokescreens by Jack Chick, document the Vatican's support of Hitler's rise to power. History also proves that the Vatican has used every available means to stamp out "heretics." Romanism defines heretics as anyone who does not give blind obedience to the pope. Her treatment of them is most currently illustrated by the bloodshed in North Ireland and the attempt to turn South Vietnam into a Catholic dictatorship under President Diem just prior to the Vietnam War.

In that case, the "heretics" were the Buddhists who had to torch themselves in the streets to get enough world attention to stop their inquisition. Many of them converted to Catholicism under the persecution. ("Vietnam, Why Did We Go?" by Avro Manhattan.) The most detailed evidence available that many of these World War II executions resulted from the refusal to convert to Catholicism comes from Croatia. Avro Manhattan in his book, "Catholic Terror Today," provides extensive photo and documented evidence of the inquisitional nature of the war.

Upon the disintegration of Yugoslavia, Ante Pavelitch became the leader of the independent Catholic state of Croatia under the protection of Mussolini and Hitler. Pope Pius XII also supported him with diplomacy and money. When he was firmly in control, he issued an ultimatum to the non-Catholic population (heretics): convert to Catholicism or die. Most of them were Eastern Orthodox and their churches were closed, parish documents destroyed and worshipers often arrested, imprisoned in their own churches and set on fire. Those who did not convert were submitted to unbelievable torture or were slaughtered outright. (See Smokescreens, chapter 3.)

Obama Selects Jesuit Schooled Leon Panetta for CIA Chief

Panetta to Be Named C.I.A. Director

By Carl Hulse AND Mark Mazzetti

Leon E. Panetta, the former congressman and White House chief of staff. (Kevin Wolf/Associated Press)President-elect Barack Obama has selected Leon E. Panetta, the former congressman and White House chief of staff, to take over the Central Intelligence Agency, an organization that Mr. Obama criticized during the campaign for using interrogation methods he decried as torture, Democratic officials said Monday.

Mr. Panetta has a reputation in Washington as a competent manager with strong background in budget issues, but has little hands-on intelligence experience. If confirmed by the Senate, he will take control of the agency most directly responsible for hunting senior Al Qaeda leaders around the globe, but one that has been buffeted since the Sept. 11 attacks by leadership changes and morale problems.

Given his background, Mr. Panetta is a somewhat unusual choice to lead the C.I.A., an agency that has been unwelcoming to previous directors perceived as outsiders, such as Stansfield M. Turner and John M. Deutch. But his selection points up the difficulty Mr. Obama had in finding a C.I.A. director with no connection to controversial counterterrorism programs of the Bush era.

Aides have said Mr. Obama had originally hoped to select a C.I.A. head with extensive field experience, especially in combating terrorist networks. But his first choice for the job, John O. Brennan, had to withdraw his name amidst criticism over his role in the formation of the C.I.A’s detention and interrogation program after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Members of Mr. Obama’s transition also raised concerns about other candidates, even some Democratic lawmakers with intelligence experience. Representative Jane Harman of California, formerly the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, was considered for the job, but she was ruled out as a candidate in part because of her early support for some Bush administration programs like the domestic eavesdropping program.

In disclosing the pick, officials pointed to Mr. Panetta’s sharp managerial skills, his strong bipartisan standing on Capitol Hill, his significant foreign policy experience in the White House and his service on the Iraq Study Group, the bipartisan panel that examined the war and made recommendations on United States policy. The officials noted that he had a handle on intelligence spending from his days as director of the Office and Management and Budget.

Mr. Deutch, now a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said Mr. Panetta and Dennis Blair, who was selected by Mr. Obama to become director of national intelligence, were an “absolutely brilliant team,” and called Mr. Panetta a “talented and experienced manager of government and a widely respected person with congress.”

He said that given global environment, there are indeed good reasons for Mr. Obama to select a C.I.A. veteran to lead the C.I.A. But he said that two of the agency’s most successful directors, John McCone and George H.W. Bush, had little or no intelligence intelligence experience when they took over at C.I.A.

“He will bring a wealth of knowledge of the government to the C.I.A. post and an outside perspective that I think might be helpful at this juncture in the C.I.A.’s history,” said Lee Hamilton, the former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and a co-chairman of the Iraq Study Group.

As C.I.A. director, Mr. Panetta would report to Mr. Blair, a retired admiral. Neither choice has yet been publicly announced. The C.I.A. has settled down from years of turmoil after the Sept. 11 attacks and fallout from flawed intelligence assessments about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction programs.

At the same time, it faces uncertainly about where it fits in the constellation of spy agencies operating under the director of national intelligence. In recent months, Michael V. Hayden, the current C.I.A. director, has clashed with Mike McConnell, the current director of national intelligence, about Mr. McConnell’s efforts to fill top intelligence jobs overseas with officers from across the intelligence community, not just the C.I.A.

Mr. Panetta, a native of Monterey, Calif., served eight terms in the House representing his home region before becoming the chief budget adviser to President Bill Clinton in 1993. He then served as Mr. Clinton’s chief of staff from July 1994 to January 1997.

Given the focus on the intelligence apparatus in the wake of the terror attacks and the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, Mr. Obama’s selections in the intelligence field are expected to be closely examined.

Mr. Hamilton said that if confirmed, Mr. Panetta will have the advantage of moving to the agency headquarters in Langley, Va. with a strong relationship to Mr. Obama, which can translate into influence within the broader intelligence community. He said Mr. Panetta’s lack of hands-on intelligence experience can be supplemented by others.

“You have to look at the team,” he said. “You clearly will want intelligence professionals at the highest levels of the C.I.A.,” he said.

Leon Edward Panetta (born June 28, 1938) is a Democratic politician and scholar from California's Central Coast. He served as White House Chief of Staff to Bill Clinton, and before that was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1976 to 1993. He is the founder and director of the Panetta Institute, serves as Distinguished Scholar to the Chancellor of the California State University system and is a professor at JESUIT Santa Clara University teaching public policy. On January 5, 2009, FOX News reported that he will be named by President-elect Barack Obama as CIA Director.

Early life and schooling

Leon Panetta was born in Monterey, California, the son of Italian immigrants who owned a restaurant there. He was raised in the Monterey area, and attended Catholic schools St. Carlos Grammar School and Carmel Mission School. He continued his education at Monterey High School, a public school where he became involved in student politics. As a junior he was Vice President of the Student Body, and became President of the Student Body as a senior.

In 1956 he entered Santa Clara University, and in 1960 he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He also received a Juris Doctor in 1963 from the Santa Clara University Law School, and soon after began practicing law.

In 1964 he joined the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant. There he received the Army Commendation Medal, and was discharged in 1966 as a Captain.
